In this presentation\, you will learn details of how complexengineering challengers and solutions resulted in the success of this project. Such challengers includedhow to replace a bridge\, build a roadway beneath the tracks\, replace a station\, install new interlocks\, andreplace an entire railroad infrastructure\, all while maintaining railroad operations and limiting impactsto users. \n“The I95Emergency Rebuild and Beyond” (2 PDH) 10:15 am – 12:15 pmPresented by: Theresa Andrejack Loux\, Ph. D.\, P.E. & Archie FilShill\, Ph.D\, Aero Aggregates NAOn the morning of June 11th\, 2023\, a tanker truck carrying approximately 8\,500 gallons of gasolinecrashed and caught fire on the Cottman Avenue exit ramp under Interstate 95 in northeast Philadelphia. The fire collapsed the bridge carrying the northbound lanes of the interstate and severely damaged thesouthbound bridge. Ultra-lightweight Foamed Glass Aggregate (UL-FGA) is a lightweight fill alternativethat was a critical component of the I-95 rebuild and supported the accelerated schedule and provided apath to reopening the interstate only 12 days post-collapse.This presentation will review the engineering properties of UL-FGA and the common building andinfrastructure applications where a UL-FGA lightweight fill solution is warranted. The engineeringchallenges from projects where UL-FGA was used will be shared through several detailed case histories\,including the I-95 Emergency Rebuild. \n“Virtual Bridge Inspection Training – AR” (2 PDH) 1:15 pm – 3:15 pmPresented by: Sunny Kim & Nicolas Sosa. Greenman-Pedersen\, Inc.The Virtual Bridge Inspection simulation software\, which uses Virtual Reality (VR\,) is a collaborativeeffort between Greeman-Pedersen\, Inc.\, the National Highway Institute (NHI) and the Federal HighwayAdministration to create a training program that complements NHI’s. bridge inspection training courses. The program is curated by certified course instructors and provides bridge inspectors with specialized\,hyper-realistic training in a safe\, interactive environment closely resembling real-world inspections. \n“Buildings & Homes in Flood Hazard Area s” (1 PDH) 3:30 pm – 4:30 pmPresented by: Brett Belair\, Simpson-TieThis course explores flood requirements\, concepts and details of flood resistant construction\, the use ofanchors\, fasteners\, and connectors in flood resistant buildings\, and the relevant terminology\, codes andstandards that should be used.. \n“The Evolution of Refrigerants for our Modern Climate” (1 PDH) 9:00 am – 10:00 amPresented by: Richard SmithWith the onslaught of Regulations against the use of Petroleum products to provide Heat & DHW inCommercial & Residential buildings\, it has become necessary to move to Electrification & Refrigerantbased heat & hot water generation. While this is going on the ever increasing pressure to move to reduceGWP of CFC HCFC and HFC type refrigerants is impacting & creating a need to select alternates tobalance efficiency\, compliance & flammability of those refrigerants. We also must review the applicationof natural refrigerants\, like carbon dioxide\, ammonia\, hydrocarbons and water. This presentation will provide an update on new lower GWP alternatives introduced into the marketplaceand it will highlight some important considerations\, particularly flammability\, that engineers\, designersand building owners should keep in mind regarding next-generation refrigerants. \n“Six Sigma Basics” ( 2 PDH) 10:15 am – 12:15 pmPresented by: Scott Damiani\, Wolters KluwerIn this seminar\, attendees will learn about the components and tools which are used in the Six Sigma DMAIC(Define\, Measure\, Analyze\, Improve\, Control) methodology. Detailed examples of several tools will bepresented for the various phases of a sample Six Sigma initiative. The session will cover how Six Sigmaintegrates with other methodologies such as Lean and Agile. The session will also address how companymanagement can create an environment for Six Sigma success. Some case studies will be presentedassociated with more than just manufacturing; such in service companies\, financial institutions\, healthcare\,and construction industry. Attendees will also learn about the various levels of Six Sigma training andcertification\, which could help with career advancement and goals. \n“Finite Volume Methods in CFD” (2 PDH) 1:15 pm – 3:15 pmPresented by: Nick DiZinno\, Ph. D.\, PE\, New York UniversityThe equations that govern fluid flow and heat transfer are extremely complex. In many instances\, they areimpossible to solve in an analytical (closed-form) manner. In these cases\, engineers are forced to rely onComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to generate a solution. As the foundation of manycommercial CFD software packages\, the Finite Volume Method (FVM) is a general solution framework thatis applicable to abroad range of problems. This seminar will give a conceptual introduction to FVM to solveengineering problems. We will examine what popular CFD software packages do\, and select results from avariety of application will be presented. At the conclusion of the seminar attendees will understand thestrengths and limitations of FVM and how to utilize this knowledge when using their favorite CFD softwarepackage. \n“Coherent Turbulent Flow in Structures (1 PDH) 3:30pm-4:30pmPresented by: Wayne Oaks\, Ph. D.\, PETurbulence flow is defined by the chaotic changes in the fluid flow’s pressure and velocity. It occurs inthree dimensions and is random in nature. Yet\, there is order in this madness and I’m going to show thisorder using Coherent Turbulent Structures. Shear layers\, vortices\, and horseshoes are just some of thesestructures.Three steps are used in calculating these structures with a general description of computing the fluid field(Computation Fluid Dynamics)\, finding trajectories of particles inserted into the flow (LagrangianParticle Tracking)\, and how to generate the Coherent Turbulent Structures (finite-time Lyapunovexponents).Finally\, two examples from the work will show the application of these techniques. The first is a COVID19related study of the efficacy of face masks in reducing the spread of the virus. The second will show thepath of a point source release of pollutants in southern Manhattan. \n“Artificial Intelligence\, Comparative Study of Large Language Models” (1 PDH) 9:00 am – 10:00 amPresented by: Gus Sapias\, President\, XogitoIn today’s rapidly evolving digital world\, Large Language Models (LLMs) have become instrumental inreshaping diverse sectors\, ranging from customer service to content creation\, and from languagetranslation to code generation. Thispresentation will embark on a deep dive into both open-source and closed-source LLMs\, aiming toprovide engineers with a holistic understanding of these powerful tools. \n“Intrinsic Safety Electrical Protection for Hazardous Areas” (2 PDH) 10:15 am – 12:15 pmPresented by: John Piccinic\, Regional Sales Mgr.\, Eaton Corp.Intrinsic Safety (IS) offers unique advantages compared to other protection methods for the safe use oflow-powered electronic instrumentation in potentially explosive hazardous areas. This seminar willhighlight those advantages and demonstrate how the “Zener” barrier’s simple circuit design achieves ISprotection using an electrical engineering perspective in layman’s terms. The presentation will include ahard-wired demonstration and circuit simulation software to visualize how IS works. In addition\, videos ofexplosions will be shown along with a live demonstration of electric (arc) spark ignition. IS productspecifications and standards will also be discussed to facilitate the engineer’s IS product selectionknowledge. \n“Machine Learning Driven Mechanism Design” (2 PDH) 1:15 pm – 3:15 pmPresented by: Anurag Purwar\, Ph. D.\, SUNY-Stony BrookThis seminar will present a new computational and physical paradigm for robot mechanism design\, whichbrings together machine learning and kinematics for motion design problems. Attendees will learn about anew computational framework for simultaneous type and dimensional synthesis and explore theinteraction between geometry and motion in a web-based design software. Moreover\, attendees will alsobe able to physically prototype robot mechanisms via a “walking” robot. \n“Energy Conversion Efficiencies” (1 PDH) 3:30 pm – 4:30 pmPresented by: Yongjian Gu\, Ph. D.\, P.E.\, US Merchant Marine AcademyEfficiency is one of the most popular subjects to describe how well an energy conversion processes.Energy exists in numerous forms such as thermal\, mechanical and electrical. Energy Conversion istypically fulfilled by a process through equipment or a machine; thus the conversion efficiency isfrequently referred as the equipment or machine efficiency\, for example pump efficiency\, motor efficiency\,boiler efficiency\, heat pump efficiency and turbine efficiency. This presentation presents and illustratesthese various efficiencies. In general\, measurement of the energy conversion efficiency is based on the firstlaw of thermodynamics in one identical energy source level\, which is called the “first law efficiency

SUMMARY:ISA Philly Online Program: "Advances in Industrial Wireless"
DESCRIPTION:Join presenter Shane Filer of Neal Systems Inc (NSI)\, as he presents Industrial Wireless Systems for process applications – which have been a point of contention since they first started becoming popular in the 1990’s. Sometimes they work amazingly well\, and other times they are miserable failures. It has certainly left a lot of distrust with many companies. Yet no one in our industry questions whether we SHOULD use wireless tech (since we all use cell phones and have wireless routers in our homes) – we instead question whether it will actually work for our specific application\, and whether vendor promises live up to the hype. This session will delve into the following: \n• Basic wireless principals for the various types of industrial radio solutions \n• Overview of various protocols that are utilized \n• Newer wireless options for the 21st century \n• Practical tips on best practices for successfully commissioning and maintaining industrial wireless systems. \nPlease join ISA Philly on Feb 10 for this online program! Our presentation will begin at 11:30 and end at 12:30. The speaker will be available from 12:30 to 1:00 pm for a question and answer session. (All times EST).

SUMMARY:NJWATER Training: Measurements of pH and Flow
DESCRIPTION:Measurements of pH and Flow: How They Are Done and Why They Matter\nPresented by Walter Freeman and Wayne Martin of Neal Systems\, Inc. \n4.0 TCH for NJ-Licensed Water Operators \nTCH Course Number 04-062102-30 \nTCH Training Event and Box Lunch \nYou have heard the word “pH” used to describe drinking water quality\, but do you know exactly what it means? Whether in treating drinking water or waste water\, pH is important. Low-pH drinking water can degrade pipes\, causing toxic metals such as copper and lead to leach into the water supply. Water with a pH that is too high has an unpleasant taste\, and the effectiveness of disinfectants such as chlorine is decreased. This course will give you a better understanding of that it is\, how we measure it accurately\, what to measure it with and proper calibration practices. \nIn many processes\, flow measurement\, whether it is a liquid or a gas\, is often a critical parameter. It is essential to know that the right fluid is in the right place at the right time in most operations. Applications ranging from water storage and transmission to wastewater treatment\, leak detection and pump management cannot be done without flow meter technology. Today’s lecture will include history of flow metering\, various means of measurement and how they communicate in the modern world\, and selection considerations. \nSchedule: \nSign-In: 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM \nTechnical Training Session with Two Breaks: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM \n1:15 PM: Dismissal and Lunch \nPre-Registration is required by all members. Please register by July 12\, 2021. Contact hours are being accredited by the New Jersey Water Association.
