At its core, the Foxboro 84CF uses the vortex shedding principle, in which a bluff body creates alternating vortices as fluid flows past it. These vortices are detected using DirectSense™ piezoelectric sensors, producing a frequency signal proportional to the fluid’s velocity. Unlike traditional vortex meters, the 84CF also includes a built-in platinum RTD (Pt1000) sensor, allowing the device to dynamically compensate for temperature and compute mass flow directly within the meter. This multivariable capability is particularly valuable in saturated steam and gas flow applications, where pressure and temperature changes can significantly affect density and flow calculations. By incorporating temperature measurement and using internal compensation algorithms, the 84CF enables users to achieve highly accurate mass flow measurement with a single instrument, reducing complexity and improving process control.
